The Ministry of Local Government is conducting workshops to equip local government officials with knowledge and skills to integrate environmental, social, health and safety safeguards into public procurement under the Local Climate Adaptive Living Facility (LoCAL) Project.
Speaking during a workshop in Rwampara District, Assistant Commissioner for Procurement Inspection and Coordination, Mr. Johnson Musignuzi, emphasised the need to ensure that development projects deliver value for money while protecting communities and the environment.
He highlighted Section 66 of the PPDA Act, Cap 205, and the PPDA Regulations, 2023, which provide for the integration of environmental, social and safety considerations into procurement processes.
Mr. Musinguzi urged the district officials to prioritise stakeholder engagement, environmental protection, workplace safety and measures to prevent gender-based violence, child labour and other social risks throughout project implementation.
He further emphasised the importance of monitoring compliance, noting that contractors who fail to meet their environmental and social obligations may face contractual sanctions, including withheld payments.
A similar workshop was held in Kwanakizi last week as the Ministry continues to strengthen the capacity of local governments to implement sustainable procurement practices under the LoCAL Project.
