The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abbas Byakagaba, has reaffirmed the Uganda Police Force’s commitment to strengthening security across the country, noting that a safe and secure environment is essential for effective service delivery, economic growth, the implementation of Government programmes and ongoing accountability efforts.
He, however, emphasised that security cannot be left to the Police alone, describing it as a shared responsibility between Government, Local Governments and citizens. Addressing Local Government political and technical leaders during the Ministry of Local Government’s meeting on enforcement of the presidential directives, the IGP called for stronger collaboration in safeguarding public security infrastructure, protecting police land and supporting crime prevention through initiatives such as street lighting, CCTV cameras and active community participation.
