The Ministry of Local Government (MoLG), through its Local Councils Development Department, has commenced a three-day induction programme for newly elected lower local government leaders in Buruli County, Masindi District, aimed at strengthening their leadership capacity and equipping them with the knowledge and skills required to improve service delivery in their respective communities.
The induction, being held at the District Health Officer’s Resource Centre, provides a platform for the councillors to understand their roles, responsibilities and the local government systems within which they are expected to operate.
Addressing the leaders on Day One, the Member of Parliament for Buruli County, Hon. Aled Ronald Akugizibwe, urged the councillors to embrace teamwork, mutual respect and integrity in the execution of their duties. He emphasised that effective leadership depends on cooperation among council members and their commitment to working in the best interests of the communities they represent.
Hon. Akugizibwe further called on the councillors to support the implementation of Government programmes, stressing the importance of working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that development initiatives reach their intended beneficiaries and contribute to improved livelihoods.
The day’s sessions were facilitated by Mr. Rogers Nayebare, Ms. Glorious Kamayangi and Mr. Vincent Abigaba, who guided the newly elected leaders through key topics, including decentralisation and Uganda’s local government systems, communication and public speaking, leadership development, patriotism and mindset change, urbanisation, physical development planning, and the management of urban services.
The sessions featured active participation and interactive discussions, providing the leaders with an opportunity to engage with the facilitators, exchange views and deepen their understanding of the responsibilities entrusted to them.
The induction in Buruli County is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, after which the exercise will proceed to Bujenje County from Thursday to Saturday.
The exercise is part of the Ministry of Local Government’s broader efforts to strengthen grassroots leadership, promote effective local administration and equip newly elected leaders to fulfil their mandates responsibly, while ensuring that local governance remains responsive to the needs and development priorities of the communities they serve.
