IGANGA DISTRICT – The Minister of Local Government, Hon. Barugahara Balaam Ateenyi, has visited Iganga General Hospital following numerous complaints from residents over the poor state of the facility.
The visit, which drew a large crowd of residents, patients and local leaders, uncovered serious management and sanitation challenges at the district’s main referral hospital.
In-Charge Wanted to Resign Over Bribery Pressure
During the visit, Hon. Balaam revealed that the hospital in-charge had wanted to resign, saying she was overwhelmed by the situation at the facility.
According to the in-charge, she had been facing pressure from some political leaders who allegedly demanded bribes and threatened her for refusing to comply.
Hon. Balaam strongly condemned the act, describing those behind it as criminals sabotaging government services. He assured the in-charge of full protection from government and urged her not to abandon the people of Iganga.
Foul Smell From Overflowing Latrines
Residents raised alarm over the appalling sanitation at the hospital. The entire facility and the surrounding neighbourhood is covered by a foul smell emanating from full and overflowing pit latrines and poor drainage.
The situation has made it difficult for patients to stay in the wards and for neighbours to live comfortably.
In response, the Minister immediately instructed the hospital administration to have all full latrines emptied without delay to restore hygiene and dignity at the facility.
Boda Boda Parking Fees Scrapped
The Minister also intervened on complaints that boda bodas bringing patients were being charged parking fees. He scrapped the charges, directing that access for boda bodas carrying patients should be free.
It was further established that the hospital has no ultrasound scanning services.
Bodies Rotting in Mortuary
Another disturbing issue raised was the handling of dead bodies. Residents complained that bodies are left to rot at the hospital mortuary, causing a terrible stench. They further alleged that whenever they report the matter, they are asked to provide fuel for the hospital vehicle to transport the bodies.
Hon. Balaam said this was unacceptable and promised to follow up to ensure a proper mortuary management system is put in place.
Unstable Power Supply
The hospital in-charge also informed the Minister that the hospital is operating on inadequate electricity, which affects its ability to offer 24-hour inpatient services and to run the laboratory, radiology, and cold chain for drugs.
Acting swiftly, Hon. Balaam made a phone call to the responsible electricity distribution agency during the meeting. The agency has promised to immediately visit the hospital and connect it to the main power line that carries higher voltage to ensure a stable power supply.
Iganga General Hospital offers free 24-hour inpatient and outpatient services including Acute Care, Chronic Care, Orthopaedics, Dental, Eye Clinic, Mental Health, Radiology, Laboratory and Pharmacy, among others.
