Minister Balaam Orders Investigation into Alleged Illegal Charges at Mbarara Central Market

Hon. Minister Balaam has directed Commissioner Charles Magumba and the Mbarara District Police Commander (DPC) to investigate allegations that some vendors operating inside Mbarara Central Market were being required to pay UGX 200,000 to conduct their business.

The directive followed complaints raised by traders within the market, who alleged that unauthorized payments were being demanded from vendors as part of the market’s day-to-day operations. The minister instructed the investigating authorities to establish the facts and determine whether any unlawful charges had been imposed.

Speaking to traders, Hon. Balaam emphasized that no vendor should be subjected to illegal or unauthorized payments in order to operate within the market. He urged Commissioner Magumba and the DPC to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation and take appropriate action based on the findings.

Hon. Balaam called upon traders with information or evidence relating to the allegations to cooperate with investigators, noting that public participation is essential in addressing corruption and improving service delivery.

“I am the minister for the people, and I will work for them,” Hon. Balaam said, reiterating his commitment to improving governance, promoting accountability, and safeguarding the welfare of ordinary citizens.
