The LEGS Project

The Local Economic Growth Support Project is a strategic initiative by the Government of Uganda Through the Ministry of Local Government, It seeks to uplift the economic well being of rural communities by Improving access to water enhancing agriculture productivity, promoting environmental conservation and strengthening local value chains.

The project is a direct response to Uganda's National Local Economic Development (LED) Policy, adopted in 2014 and contributes to long term development goals by supporting community-driven solutions and enterprise growth

Project Objective

To improve household incomes in targeted districts with low water access and high potential for production-based economic transformation by overcoming structural barriers to growth and sustainability.

The LEGS Project supports 17 Districts across five-regions of uganda and is implemented in two main Componets

  • Central
  • Eastern
  • Northern
  • West Nile

Component A

Water for Enhanced Agricultural Productivity & Environmental Conservation (Implemented in 10 districts).

The Project is being Implemented in 10 Districts of : Alentong, Bunyangobu, Kabarole, Kumi, Kibuku, Katakwi, Kyenjojo, Ntoroko, Gomba and Nakaseke.

Component b

Water for Enhanced Agricultural Productivity & Environmental Conservation (Implemented in 10 districts).

The Project is being Implemented in 17 Districts: Including the above 10 Plus Adjumani, Buyende, Tororo, Buikwe, Nwoya, Luwero and Rukungiri

Project Sponsors

LEGS is funded through a concessional loan of USD 43 Million from Islamic Development Bank. This amount includes USD 10 million earmarked for Rural Finance to support local enterprises.
