Kanungu District has officially entered the third day of a comprehensive, five-day mass immunization campaign against Measles and Rubella, targeting all children aged between 9 and 59 months.
The district-wide exercise, which commenced on October 1, 2026, was formally launched at Kirima Great Stewards of Hope Primary School in Kanungu Town Council by Kanungu District Local Government in collaboration with Uganda Red Cross Society, UNICEF and WHO. With only two days remaining before the campaign concludes on October 5, 2026, district authorities and health partners are issuing an urgent call to parents and guardians to ensure no child is left behind.
The launch was presided over by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Ambrose Amanyire Mwesigye, who strongly urged parents and caregivers to utilize the remaining days to vaccinate all eligible children.
“Immunization remains our most vital intervention in shielding children from vaccine-preventable diseases,” RDC Mwesigye stated. He commended the Government of Uganda and international health partners for their sustained support of programs designed to protect future generations.
He emphasized that all children within the 9-to-59-month age bracket must receive the vaccine during this campaign, regardless of whether they have been previously immunized.
Vaccination teams have been deployed across the district, operating at all health facilities as well as designated community outreach posts. The service is entirely free of charge.
Alongside the immunization drive, the Uganda Red Cross Society, in partnership with UNICEF and district authorities, is actively conducting Ebola preparedness and prevention activities within Kanungu.
According to Ms. Samantha Asiima, the Epidemics and Pandemics Preparedness and Response Officer for the Uganda Red Cross Society, the partners are holding orientation meetings with key stakeholders to strengthen community vigilance.
“This initiative aims to promote awareness and encourage the general public to remain vigilant and observe all standard operating procedures,” Asiima noted. “Although Uganda is currently Ebola-free, maintaining high preparedness levels in border districts like Kanungu is critical.”
Parents who have not yet immunized their children are advised to visit their nearest health facility or community outreach post before the campaign officially closes on October 5, 2026.
