TERYET, KAPCHORWA DISTRICT — Hon. Balaam Barugahara, has pledged to intervene after residents of Teryet Parish decried the stripping of their sub-county status and the sorry state of a key road despite the release of Shs 1 billion for its rehabilitation.
Hon. Balaam, who was meeting residents of Teryet Parish on was met with two pressing concerns from the community.
Residents told the Minister that Teryet, which had previously been elevated to a sub-county, had its status revoked without clear explanation, a move they say has crippled service delivery and development in the area. The community, which hosts the famous Teryet National High Altitude Training Centre, said they feel abandoned and are demanding that their sub-county status be reinstated.
On the second issue, residents raised alarm over the Kapnoibei Road that connects the Parish to Kween District and the training centre. According to locals, government released Shs 1 billion for the road to be worked on, but to date, no tangible work has been done and the road remains impassable, especially during the rainy season.
In response, Hon. Balaam assured residents that their grievances had been heard and that action would be taken.
On the road funds, the Minister was firm. He said he will personally follow up the matter and cause an investigation into how the Shs 1 billion was utilized. He vowed to have those found responsible for misappropriating the funds apprehended by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and brought to justice.
“I have heard you. It is unacceptable for money to be released for a road and the road is not worked on. I am going to investigate this matter. Whoever took that money must be apprehended by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and face the law,” Hon. Balaam said.
On the issue of the sub-county, Hon. Balaam promised a more consultative approach. He said he will engage the Kween District leadership and other relevant ministries to understand why Teryet’s sub-county status was stripped and explore the possibility of having it reinstated.
