Maracha District- Hon. Balaam Barugahara has uncovered alleged financial irregularities at Kololo Public Secondary School in Maracha District, leading to the arrest of the school’s Head Teacher and the Chairman of the School Management Committee.
The two officials were charging students 80,000 shillings with no food provision attached. They claimed the money was meant to pay 10 teachers who are not on the government payroll.
It was during a monitoring visit by Hon. Balaam that the discrepancies were discovered. A review of the figures showed the maths did not add up, and there was no accountability for the funds collected.
Following the discovery, the State House Anti-Corruption Unit moved in and arrested both the Head Teacher and the SMC Chair to allow for further investigations into the collection and use of the money.
Hon. Balaam condemned the practice and said no school should impose illegal charges on learners. He directed the District authorities to audit the school and ensure transparency in all future collections.
“The government is committed to protecting students from exploitation. Those found misusing school funds will be held accountable,” Hon. Balaam said during the visit.
