KALIRO DISTRICT – Hon. Balaam has made a surprise visit to Namwiwa Health Centre III in Namwiwa Sub-county, Kaliro District, following an outcry from residents over alleged poor service delivery at the facility.
During the visit, residents raised several alarming issues. They alleged that government drugs are being sold, nurses are rarely on duty, there are no IV injections and no blood in the blood bank. Residents further alleged that Mama Kits meant for expectant mothers are being sold, and that condoms are also on sale at the government facility.
The facility in-charge, Senior Clinical Officer Mr. Bwanika James, was given a chance to respond to the allegations.
On the issue of condoms, Mr. Bwanika said the health centre last received condoms in February, and therefore it is not possible that condoms are being sold since there were no condoms at the facility at the time of the visit.
On medical gloves, he said the centre receives very few gloves, making the allegations of misuse baseless. Regarding blood, he clarified that the health centre does not carry out blood transfusions, and therefore does not maintain a blood bank for transfusion services.
He also denied that Mama Kits are being sold at the facility.
Following the exchange, Hon. Balaam instructed the in-charge to stay at the health centre and remain available as State House conducts further investigations into the allegations raised by residents
