Bushenyi District Hall — Ongoing
The Minister of Local Government, Hon. Barugahara Balaam Ateenyi, is currently in Bushenyi District for the ongoing Anti-Corruption Campaign, with the engagement underway at the Bushenyi District Hall.
The meeting is bringing together district leaders, residents, and various groups to raise issues of corruption, mismanagement of public funds, and poor service delivery directly before the Minister.
One of the issues raised so far is from members of the Taxi Drivers Association.
The drivers allege that they contributed Shs. 150 million through their association, which was allegedly mismanaged by some of their leaders, leaving members suffering.
They mentioned Mucunguzi Arthur and Muhammad Lukwago in connection with the allegations. These remain allegations raised by the drivers at the meeting and have not yet been independently verified.
The drivers further allege that Shs. 150 million in Emyooga funds meant for the Taxi Drivers Association did not reach the right beneficiaries.
They also allege intimidation, claiming that the NRM District Chairman, Mr. Lukwago, is allegedly misusing his office to intimidate them. They claim about 130 taxi drivers have been taken to prison in connection with disputes linked to him.
The residents further allege that Mr. Lukwago works closely with the Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigations Department (OCCID) in the district, and that because of this alleged relationship, their reports are ignored.
Hon. Balaam is listening to the submissions as the meeting continues, with more issues from other groups expected to be raised.
The Bushenyi engagement is part of the Minister’s ongoing nationwide Anti-Corruption Campaign and PDM follow-up visits, aimed at listening directly to citizens, exposing corruption, and ensuring accountability in Local Governments.
The meeting is still ongoing. More updates to follow.
