An anti-corruption and accountability meeting in Sironko District took a dramatic turn today after Hon. Balaam made an impromptu stop at the construction site of the new district administration block for a quick inspection.
On site, Hon. Balaam found the project engineer and tasked him to take him around the ongoing works. Upon close inspection, the Minister raised concerns that the construction did not meet the required standards.
In a striking demonstration, Hon. Balaam picked up a hammer and struck several of the newly cast pillars. The pillars broke apart easily, crumbling under light impact – a clear sign of poor concrete mixing and substandard workmanship.
The Minister, visibly disappointed, questioned how public funds could be put into such poor-quality work that puts both lives and government resources at risk.
Hon. Balaam immediately requested the site engineer to join him at the main accountability meeting at the district headquarters to answer questions regarding the quality of work and adherence to the Bills of Quantities.
The engineer is expected to face district leaders and residents at the ongoing meeting to explain the glaring defects.
This comes as part of Hon. Balaam’s ongoing “Expose the Corrupt” campaign in the Bugisu sub-region, which has already covered several districts in a bid to enforce accountability for government projects.
