The Commissioner of Urban Administration Department at the Ministry of Local Government, Mr. Charles Magumba, has highlighted the role of elected leaders in Uganda’s urbanisation, urging Local Government Council trainers to equip leaders with the knowledge to effectively respond to the opportunities and challenges arising from urban growth.
Addressing the trainers, Magumba said elected leaders have a responsibility to create an enabling environment for investment, promote business incubation and encourage private sector participation in urban areas.
He also empassided that the elected leaders should promote good environmental practices, including proper waste management, greening initiatives, recycling and community participation in keeping urban areas clean, healthy and sustainable.
He however emphasised that urbanisation is not the responsibility of the elected leaders alone, but a shared responsibility that requires the active participation of all citizens in building well planned, clean and sustainable urban areas.
