HISTORIC KARUKARA MARKET BUILT IN 1953 ON SPOT AS HON. BALAAM MEETS RESIDENTS IN HAMURWA

Hamurwa, Rubanda / Kabale — The 72-year-old Karukara Market in Hamurwa Town Council has become the latest flashpoint in the ongoing anti-corruption baraza in Kigezi, after Hon. Balaam visited the market and held a direct engagement with vendors and residents.

Residents of Hamurwa Town Council told the Minister that they want to regain control of Karukara Market, which was established in 1953 as a community market.

Built in 1953, Karukara Market is one of the oldest trading centers in Kigezi, predating Uganda’s independence. For decades it served as the main economic hub for farmers and traders in Hamurwa, Rubanda District and the greater Kabale area.

However, residents told Hon. Balaam during the short meeting held at the market that vendors were stopped from using the market following a court decision on ownership. The community is now petitioning the Chief Justice to review the decision, alleging that the historic public market was irregularly taken over.
