Minister Nameere Re-launches GiveDirectly Cash Transfer Programme in Nakapiripirit

Today in Nakapiripirit, the Minister of State for Local Government, Hon. Justine Nameere Nsubuga, re-launched the GiveDirectly cash transfer programme, reaffirming Government’s commitment to supporting households to improve their livelihoods and become self-reliant.

Hon. Nameere said the programme complements Government’s poverty alleviation interventions, particularly the Parish Development Model (PDM), which provides households with capital and opportunities to engage in productive economic activities.

She said President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has continued to prioritise household income enhancement through PDM and other Government interventions aimed at enabling communities to improve their livelihoods.

Hon. Nameere called on beneficiaries to use the cash transfers responsibly by investing in activities that can generate sustainable income. She also encouraged them to work closely with Government extension workers and local leaders to access technical guidance and ensure that their investments are productive.

Under the GiveDirectly programme, each eligible adult will receive Shs2.35 million in two instalments. The cash is unconditional, giving beneficiaries the flexibility to determine how best to use the money according to their household priorities.

The programme has previously been implemented in Nakapiripirit, where more than 10,000 households had been enrolled by 2025, with beneficiaries investing in livestock, farm inputs and other livelihood activities.

Hon. Nameere said Government values partnerships that directly support households and complement its efforts to reduce poverty, pledging the continued support of the Ministry of Local Government to the programme.

In her closing remarks, Hon. Nameere commended GiveDirectly for its approach of delivering support directly to beneficiaries and appreciated the organisation for its continued support to communities. She also recognised the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, former Minister of Local Government Hon. Raphael Magyezi, and the Minister of State for Karamoja Affairs, Hon. Esther Anyakun, for their previous support to the programme.
