Hon. Balaam Commissions Shakit Sugar Factory in Kayunga District

Kayunga, Uganda – The Minister of Local Government, Hon. Barugahara Balaam Ateenyi, has officially commissioned the construction of the Shakit Sugar Factory in Kayunga District.

The new factory, under Shakti Sugar Limited, is established in Nalyamabidde Village, Bubajjwe Parish. The project marks a historic milestone as the first sugar factory and major manufacturing industry ever established in the Bugerere area of Kayunga.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Hon. Balaam described the development as a major step in Uganda’s economic transformation agenda. The factory is projected to create direct employment for more than 1,500 young people and provide a ready market for over 5,000 commercial sugarcane farmers in Kayunga and the surrounding districts.

The investment is expected to boost local incomes, stimulate rural industrialization, and contribute to Uganda’s sugar production, which currently exceeds 800,000 tonnes annually.

The commissioning ceremony was graced by several government leaders, including Hon. Diana Nankunda Mutasingwa, Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President, and Hon. Amos Lugoloobi, Minister of State for Planning at the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.

Once operational, the factory will house a sugar mill with a crushing capacity of 1,500 tonnes of cane per day, positioning Kayunga as a new hub for agro-industrial growth.
