BUSIA, Uganda – Drama unfolded in Busia today after the Minister for Local Government, Hon. Barugahara Balaam, stormed Busia Main Market and found it in a deplorable state.
What was meant to be a routine inspection turned into a charged outcry as vendors poured out their frustrations. The traders decried the terrible conditions they operate in, citing clogged and overflowing toilets, exorbitant monthly charges, and a lack of electricity in the facility.
Put on the spot to explain the filth and disorganization, the Town Clerk struggled to justify the situation, claiming the causes were natural – a defense that only fueled more outrage among the vendors.
In a decisive move, the State House Anti-Corruption Unit arrested the Town Clerk on the spot to assist with investigations into alleged mismanagement of the market.
Following the inspection, Hon. Balaam proceeded to the district headquarters for a meeting with district officials. He has told all market vendors to be at the public Baraza today at 4:00 PM to openly air their grievances and expose all corrupt officials behind the rot in the market.
