The Ministry of Local Government today held a meeting to boost the productivity of agro-processing facilities across Uganda. The session was chaired by the Under Secretary, Hajji Sewante M. Kaliphan, on behalf of Permanent Secretary Ben Kumumanya, focusing on making these public investments fully operational for rural communities.
The Meeting was attended by technical teams from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives (MoTIC), the Uganda Cooperative Alliance (UCA), the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), and Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), who collectively agreed to develop a comprehensive roadmap for the revitalization and long-term sustainability of agro-processing facilities within Local Governments.
Building on that mandate, the teams today focused on concrete strategies to restore all agro processing facilities to peak production.
The target infrastructure includes r
maize mills, coffee hullers, rice hullers, milk coolers, feed mills, bulking stores, and mini-irrigation schemes.
To achieve this, the stakeholders agreed on a national assessment of the facilitie, steps to extend three-phase grid electricity to rural sites, establish more effective local management committees, and support farmers in boosting crop supplies to keep the machinery running continuously.
The meeting took place at the Ministry of Local Government headquarters in Kampala.
