Budaka District Engineer Referred to IGG Over Shs 600 Million Hospital Ward Project

The Minister of State for Local Government, Hon. Justine Nameere, has referred the Budaka District Engineer to the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) for investigation over a hospital ward project at Budaka Health Centre IV whose expenditure and progress came under scrutiny.

The District Engineer informed the Minister that about Shs2 billion has so far been spent on the project. Hon. Nameere, however, questioned the progress after finding the facility still incomplete despite being under construction for about three years.

She has referred the District Engineer to the IGG for investigation to establish accountability for the funds.

The inspection of the hospital, also raised concerns over a possible wider staffing gap at Budaka Health Centre IV after what the Minister found on the ground appeared to differ from staffing information provided by the facility leadership.

At the maternity ward, a midwife told Hon. Nameere that she was working alone and overwhelmed by the workload, despite facility leadership indicating that there were at least five midwives, raising questions over the actual availability and deployment of health workers.

Hon. Nameere also toured the laboratory and other sections of the health centre as she assessed service delivery at the facility.
