The Inspectorate of Government (IGG) has urged Local Government Council trainers to equip council leaders with the knowledge and values needed to strengthen accountability, integrity and the fight against corruption.
Ms. Christine Lamwaka, the Assistant Director at the Inspectorate of Government (IGG), made the call while addressing participants during the Training of Trainers for the induction of Local Government Councils at Brovad Hotel in Masaka.
Lamwaka said trainers have a critical role in shaping how council leaders understand and practice good governance, emphasizing transparency, accountability, citizen participation, responsiveness and effective use of public resources, thus urging them to equip council leaders with practical approaches for promoting transparency in budgets, expenditure.
She further raised concern over public apathy in the fight against corruption, noting that some citizens witness misuse of public assets, diversion of medicines and stalled projects but fail to speak out. She called for stronger citizen action while urging leaders to reject bribery, embezzlement, nepotism and sectarianism.
The training, now in its fifth day, is part of the Ministry of Local Government’s efforts to prepare competent trainers who will soon be rolled out across the country to induct newly elected Local Government Council leaders.
