Minister for Local Government Balaam Calls for immediate Disciplinary Action Against Officials Over Garbage Mismanagement

25th July, 2026 Saturday
The Minister of Local Government, Hon. Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, has directed the Fort Portal City leadership to initiate disciplinary action against officials responsible for waste management following the continued accumulation of garbage at Kabundaire Market.

Speaking during a community baraza held at the market, the Minister said the failure to manage waste despite the availability of resources and the collection of local taxes points to gross negligence and possible corruption. He emphasized that public resources must be used for their intended purpose to improve service delivery.

Honourable Minister Balaam, has directed that the heap of garbage be removed by close of day, reaffirming Government’s commitment to restoring cleanliness, accountability and effective service delivery.

“Today, we are cleaning our city. Next week, we go back to cleaning our institutions by rooting out corruption and ensuring every public officer is accountable to the people they serve.”

The Minister urged residents, local leaders and all stakeholders to take collective responsibility for keeping their communities clean, emphasizing that maintaining a clean environment is essential for public health, environmental protection and the overall development of Fort Portal City. He reaffirmed Government’s commitment to sustaining the National Clean-Up Campaign as a shared responsibility for all Ugandans.
